Season phenology: early

Weather conditions:

Early to average season. Generally overcast with some mist and drizzle. Occasional sunny periods. Winds variable; temperatures (not records) fluctuating with wind direction. No flooding / hail / snow.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Breeding conditions:

Area of open maritime tundra on the east coast of the Russi Zavorot Peninsula, north of the city of Nar'yan Mar and the Pechora delata region. Large number of shallow lakes and ponds, of varying sizes, with a complete network of channels and rivers. Flat landscape with little relief. Habitat mostly sedge-grass and moss-lichen tundar, although greater botanical diversity near disused huts. Localised patches of Salix and Betula in sheltered hollows. Common breeding birds include: Cygnus bewickii, Anser albifrons, Aythya marila, Lagopus lagopus, Charadrius hiaticula, Pluvialis squatarola, Calidris alpina, calidris temminckii, Phalariopus lobatus, Philomachus pugnax, Stercorarius parasiticus, Anthus cervinus, Motacilla alba, Calcarius lapponicus. Low predation levels in 1991, but Arctic fox present in subsequent years.
